Dr. Barathi Sivasailam has been interested in science since she was young, particularly biology. She has always been amazed by the human body and its inner workings, and she wanted a career that combined her academic interests with her passion for working with people. She grew up watching her mother, who is a physician, touch so many lives in a positive way – medicine was the perfect career for her.

Today, as a board-certified, fellowship-trained gastroenterologist, Dr. Sivasailam is honored to be part of her patients’ health and life journeys. She understands that her patients trust her during a vulnerable and stressful time in their lives, and she does not take this trust for granted. She is comfortable working within all areas of gastroenterology and can treat all GI conditions.

Dr. Sivasailam graduated with honors from Brown University in Providence, RI, with a bachelor’s degree in human biology, human health, and disease. She earned her medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed residency training at University of Maryland Medical Center. She went on to complete a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at New York University Grossman School of Medicine in New York City.

“I hope my friendly and calm demeanor makes patients feel at ease in sharing their stories with me. I want to collaborate with patients to come to a care plan that we both feel confident and comfortable with,” Dr. Sivasailam said. “I feel strongly that patient care needs to be individualized for every unique person. I always want to make sure that patients understand their treatment options and why we choose to do what we do.”

Before joining Capital Digestive Care, Dr. Sivasailam was a gastroenterology and hepatology fellow at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine in New York City. She served as chief resident during her internal medicine residency at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

Dr. Sivasailam is originally from Maryland and is thrilled to be back in her home state. When she is not at work, she loves trying new cuisines, restaurants, and bakeries and learning about new cultures via their food traditions. She also enjoys being outdoors in her free time and likes to hike, bike, and run.
