Mark T. Birns, M.D., FACP, FACG

Dr. Mark T. Birns is a Diplomate of the American Board of Gastroenterology, as well as a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He graduated from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and then remained there to complete a three-year Internal Medicine Residency. Following his Residency, he completed a two-year Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center, where his input was instrumental in the development of the flexible sigmoidoscope, a routine screening tool in the detection of lower intestinal diseases. Immediately following his Fellowship, Dr. Birns and his family returned to the East Coast, where he was asked to be Assistant Chief of Gastroenterology at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, as well as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University and Health Sciences Medical School in Bethesda, Md. He served as physician for many generals, dignitaries and members of Congress while also developing specific recognized expertise in the field of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. While at Walter Reed, he instituted a new technique for the treatment of internal bleeding, as well as successfully performing the first endoscopic sphincterotomy in the United States Army, a procedure whereby gallstones can be removed without surgery in certain situations. Consequently, he was asked to be the major contributing author to Radiology of the Liver, Biliary Tract, Pancreas and Spleen, a comprehensive textbook which covers his special interest in pancreatic and biliary diseases.
As a result of his continued academic pursuits and contributions to medicine, he was awarded the distinction of being named a Fellow in the American College of Physicians (F.A.C.P.) and a Fellow in the American College of Gastroenterology (F.A.C.G.). He maintains a teaching position at Georgetown University as Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine. Washingtonian Magazine has acknowledged Dr. Birns as one of the "Top Doctors" in Gastroenterology since 1993.
